heart of the matter
Our world is obsessed with image. A big house, shiny car, nice clothes, that's where it's at today. Style, hair, makeup, plastic surgery, the newest fashions. That's what gets all the attention and makes all the headlines.
But all of this is external, surface stuff. What really matters goes much deeper. The old Sprite slogan said it well - ‘Image is nothing, thirst is everything’.
The truth is - God doesn't much care about image. It isn't your outside he is concerned with as much as your inside. "Man looks on outward appearances, but God looks upon the heart." - 1 Samuel 16
When we get to the heart of the matter, what we find is that it's a matter of the heart.
Why? Because the human heart is where change needs to take place. Until the heart is changed, until it receives a transplant and is transformed, until it dies to self and is made alive again in Christ, all of the superficial and external efforts in the world won’t be enough. The heart is where change needs to begin, and the Gospel of Jesus Christ is the only power in this world strong enough to transform the human heart.
"The Gospel is the power of God for salvation to all who believe." - Romans 1
"Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with your free spirit." - Psalm 51
